Bronx Arts Ensemble Announces 45th Season

The Bronx Arts Ensemble’s 2017-2018 concert season, Music Through a Global Lens, brings locally and internationally-known artists to venues around the Bronx.  This season will include a special emphasis on the sounds of Cuba and India.

Fall and Holiday Season

The  season opens when Bronx Arts Ensemble (BAE) musicians join jazz artist Elio Villafranca to perform selections from his work Cinqué, which traces musical traditions from Africa to the Caribbean to the Bronx. The concert takes place on Saturday, October 14th at 7:30pm at Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture, 450 Grand Concourse. Tickets are $15 and $5 for students.

To celebrate Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday year, BAE’s pianist Adrienne Kim, violinist Ashley Horne and cellist Eliana Mendoza perform his Piano Trio, along with trios by Beethoven (Op.1, No.1) and Brahms (No.2) on Sunday, November 19th at 2pm at Horace Mann Recital Hall, 231 West 246th Street. Tickets are $15 and $5 for students.

BAE presents the Manhattan Brass Quintet for its annual Holiday Concert. Known for 25 years for its outstanding and innovative performances, the Quintet will perform on Sunday, December 10th at 1pm at the Bartow Pell Mansion (895 Shore Road). Tickets are free with the price of admission to the Mansion which is $8 for adults and $6 for students/seniors. Manhattan Brass Quintet repeats their holiday presentation with a free performance at the Mall at Bay Plaza (200 Baychester Ave) at 3pm the same afternoon.  

Thursday Grooves, the newest addition to BAE’s season at the Atrium Social Lounge of the Marriott Residence Inn (1776 Eastchester Road), features BAE’s Jazz Trio performing a free concert on the first and third Thursday of every month, from 6-8pm. The three jazz musicians are part of BAE’s staff of Teaching Artists who deliver BAE’s Arts-In-Education program. BAE employs over 70 Teaching Artists who are musicians, dancers, visual artists and actors in residence at over 40 public schools throughout the Bronx.

BAE is throwing a Jam Party, a chamber music reading party, for advanced instrumentalists and listeners who want to experience the energy of live music, on Thursday, October 26th, and again on May 3rd, at 6pm at the Bronx Heritage Music Center, 1303 Louis Nine Boulevard.  To sign up, please go to http://bronxartsensemble.org/event/chamber-music-jam/

Events from January through May

The theme of Music Through a Global Lens continues with a fusion of Latin jazz and classical music in celebration of Paquito D’Rivera‘s 70th birthday and his longstanding relationship with BAE on January 28, 2018 at Horace Mann Recital Hall.

Indian Classical Music fused with European classical music will be heard on April 7th, when members of the Bronx Arts Ensemble perform with Ayaan Ali Bangash at Lovinger Theater at Lehman College (250 Bedford Park Boulevard West).

BAE’s Woodwind Quintet performs Dances from Around the World at Vladeck Hall in the Amalgamated Houses (74 Van Cortlandt Park South) on February 11th and on February 10th at the brownstone home of Samuel Brooks, President of the Mott Haven Historical Homes Association..

BAE presents the Mimi Jones Trio performing jazz on March 24th at Lehman College’s Studio Theater (250 Bedford Boulevard West)

Since 1972, BAE has brought the arts to neighborhoods across the Bronx through free and low-cost concerts, and Arts-In-Education programs in the public schools.
